What we think about Xero
To test Xero, we ran a full set of real business numbers through it rather than reviewing a demo file. This is how it went: signing up took a couple of minutes.
Our bank doesn't support automatic feeds, so we imported statements as a file and mapped the columns to the matching Xero fields, so far so easy.The first thing we tested was bank reconciliation, where instead of clicking through transactions one at a time, Xero presents them in batches and suggests a match for anything that lines up with what's already in the system.
Most bookkeeping software offers this, but here it actually works. We also set up rules so recurring payments from the same vendor get categorized automatically every month, which is handy and a nice time saver.
The AI layer
Xero's AI assistant, JAX, handled an invoice we built entirely through chat, producing a correct draft ready for review. It also generates written performance summaries in plain language, explaining what the numbers mean and what to act on next, genuinely useful for anyone running a business without a bookkeeper.The Analytics dashboard let us build our own view of the business, with widgets for net income, expenses, margins, and bank balances. Each widget comes with its own AI analysis, e.g. clicking into the bank accounts widget gave us a breakdown of our actual balances and flagged where cash was too concentrated in one place. A high-level Performance report layers on top of that, pointing out which months and line items are worth a closer look.The only significant downside we found was the price: Xero, starting at $25 a month, costs more than several competing tools.Still, if you want accounting software that handles the repetitive work on its own, Xero is worth testing. Xero holds a 4.4 out of 5 rating on both G2 and Capterra, across thousands of verified reviews, consistent enough across platforms to suggest it's a genuine reflection of product quality rather than a review-site fluke.The interface comes up as clean and intuitive, and reconciliation specifically gets singled out for taking far less time than expected. Several users report saving a few hours a week once automated invoicing, payment reminders, and bank reconciliation are running.
Unlimited users on every plan is another recurring favourite, since competitors typically bill per seat and costs climb fast once a partner or bookkeeper joins.Price is the most common complaint. Users describe the jump between tiers as too steep. Support gets mixed marks too, the help documentation is well regarded, but the lack of a phone support line comes up repeatedly as a gap.
